Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Heringia is Heringia mirabilis (C.Agardh) J.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nizymenia furcata (Harvey) Chiovitti, G.W.Saunders & Kraft

Adjective (Latin), furcate, forked (Stearn 1992).

Lectotype locality: Port Phillip Heads, Victoria (Womersley 1994: 408). Lectotype: TCD, Herb. Harvey Alg. Aust. Exsicc.311 (Womersley 1994: 408). Notes: Collector: Harvey (Index Nominum Algarum). Lectotype designated by Womersley (Searles 1968: 39).
