The type species (lectotype) of the genus Plectonema is Plectonema tomasinianum Bornet ex Gomont.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pseudophormidium battersii (Gomont) Anagnostidis.

Lectotype locality: Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England; (Silva & al. 1996: 62) Type: Batters; (INA 1996) Notes: This type locality was first described by Drouet (1968: 46) (Silva et al., 1996)
