This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chondracanthus spinosus (Kützing) Guiry.

Nomenclatural note
According to Silva, Bassson & Moe (1996: 331), Fucus spinosus Linnaeus was an illegitimate renaming of Fucus denticulatus Burman, which name Linnaeus cites. Gigartina spinosa (Linnaeus) Greville, being based on Fucus spinosus , is thus illegitimate. The name Gigartina spinosa (Kützing) Harvey is therefore legitimate. - (18 August 2006) - G.M. Guiry
