The type species (holotype) of the genus Bossea is Bossea plumosa Manza.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Bossiella dichotoma (Manza) P.C.Silva.

Type locality: 2.5 miles off South Bluff, Isla Guadalupe, Baja California, Mexico; (Dawson 1953: 157) Holotype: Dawson; Dec. 21, 1949; At -1.7 foot tide level; HAHF; Dawson 8532, on sheet 54745 including slide 1413 (Dawson 1953: 157)

Adjective (Latin), ligulate (Stearn 1973).
