Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gigartina is Gigartina pistillata (S.G.Gmelin) Stackhouse.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chondracanthus squarrulosus (Setchell & N.L.Gardner) Hughey, P.C.Silva & Hommersand.

Type locality: Puerto Refugio, Isla Angel de la Guarda, Gulf of Calif.; (Dawson 1961: 273) Type: Dawson 239-40; Jan. 27, 1940; Cast ashore; UC; ex AHF (Dawson 1961: 273) Notes: Dawson (1944: 303) notes that the type specimen was cast up on shore at high tide, north shore beach at Puerto Refugio and that the type is located at Herb. AHF (no. 43). Isotype: UC 700708 (Hughey et al., 2001).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), pectinate, with narrow close-set divisions like a comb (Stearn 1973).
