Taxonomic note
"The rare attested records of Chara fibrosa s.l. in Europe are closely related to rice fields. Presumably, the original oospores were accidentally introduced together with rice seeds imported from South-East Asia. Depending on the country/region of the original rice-seed material, different alien species may have arrived (see C. oryzae, this vol.) or may come in to Europe in the future. In most cases, the foreign materials will lead to ephemeral appearance of the exotic species, which are not able to adapt to the climatic context and cannot develop stable populations in Europe. These taxa are included in the present monograph for their witness of the viability of oospores and for their contribution to the record of plant dissemination through human activity." (Soulié-Märsche & Abdelahad 2024). - (10 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry

Distributional note
"Chara fibrosa s.l. is known from exceptional occurrences in South France and Italy. Bergmeier and Abrahamczyk (2008) mentioned C. fibrosa from Crete (Greece), where it was later again seen in lake Kournas (van de Weyer pers. comm.). Plants with the same characters that belong undoubtedly to Chara subsect. Agardhia, were also identified in rice fields near Szarvas, Hungary (Mesterházy and Csiky pers. comm.)." (Soulié-Märsche & Abdelahad 2024). - (10 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry

Conservational note
"As a non-native, exotic species, Chara fibrosa s.l. requires particular habitat conditions that are rarely fulfilled in Europe. There is no risk that the species should become invasive. " (Soulié-Märsche & Abdelahad 2024). - (10 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry
