The type species (lectotype) of the genus Characium is Characium sieboldii A.Braun.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Characiopsis minuta (A.Braun) Borzì.
Neotype (Lectotype?): the single cell illustrated as no. 6 in Tab V, F n Braun (1855): Epitype: strain ACOI 2423 (cryopreseved), deposited at ACOI (epitype) (Amaral et al. 2020: 200, fig. 1) Notes: in Oedogonio fonticola (INA).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), very small, minute (Stearn 1973).
