Nomenclatural note
The authorship of Stictyosiphon tortilis is usually cited as (Ruprecht) Reinke. However, the intended basionym, Scytosiphon tortilis Ruprecht (1850), is illegitimate, being a later homonym of Scytosiphon tortilis (Suhr) Trevisan (1849), based on Asperococcus tortilis Suhr (1836). When Gobi (1874) transferred Ruprecht's illegitimate binomial to Dictyosiphon, Dictyosiphon tortilis Gobi became a legitimate name (Art. 58.1), q.v., and thus may serve as a basionym. Thus, the authorship of Stictyosiphon tortilis is (Gobi) Reinke (see Athanasiadis 2021).

Taxonomic note
Plants reported from California lack colourless harirs and probably are not referable to this genus (Wynne 1972). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Distributional note
The only report from the Mediterranean (Adriatic; Munda 1979) is queried by Cormaci et al. (2012: 230) on the basis that no detail was given by Munda of her report of this "cold-boreal species". - (27 June 2012) - M.D. Guiry
