Type locality: Rottnest Island, Western Australia. (Sonder 1845: 53). Holotype: Preiss No. 2536; MEL 10260 (Yoshida 1998: 866). Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Wollaston (1968: 323)

Distributional notes
Invasive species in the Mediterranean (Klein & Verlaque 2011), where it was first found at Livorno, Italy prior to 1969. Verlaque et al. (2015: 119) suggest shipping or escape from an aquarium as the likely vectors. - (17 Sep 2012) - M.D. Guiry
