Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: Port Noarlunga, South Australia (Silva & al. 1996: 396). Holotype: Womersley; 13 March 1977; in low eulittoral pools on offshore reef, on basal leaves of Sargassum lacerifolium. AD A47978 - “Marine Algae of southern Australia” No. 182 (Womersley 1998: 412). Notes: Womersley (1998: 412) notes that there are also isotypes.

Origin of species name
Noun (Latin), diminutive of "filix" a fern, also a particular fern. (Brown 1946).

General environment
This is a marine species.

Apparently always epiphytic on larger, usually cartilaginous, brown and occasionally red algae (Womersley 1978: 240).
