The type species (holotype) of the genus Porphyrosiphon is Porphyrosiphon notarisii Kützing ex Gomont.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lyngbya lutea Gomont.

Syntype localities: Hab. in summo limite maris rupes et palos aqua dulci irroratos aut aquam subsalsam ad littora freti Sundici (Hofman-Bang et Liebman in herb. Agardh!), sinus Kielensis (Reinke !), insulae Puffin Hiberniae (Batters ! ) , oceani Atlantici prope Brest (Crouan !) et Biarritz (Thuret !), oras dalmaticas (Zanardini in herb. de Toni !), littora Africae borealis apud Tingin (Schousboe in herb. Thuret !), Antillas (Mazé et Schramm in herb. Crouan !), etiam aquas thermales apud Terracine Italiae (Fiorini Mazzanti in herb. Lenormand !).; (Gomont 1893: 142) Notes: "insulae Puffin Hiberniae" probably refers to Puffin Island in Anglesey, Wales. A lectotype from the Agardh herbarium would be appropriate.
