Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fragilaria is Fragilaria pectinalis (O.F.Müller) Lyngbye.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Fragilaria vaucheriae (Kützing) J.B.Petersen.

Type Information
Type locality: "Quelle bei Weissenfels", Germany; (Wetzel & Ector 2015: 275) Type: on Vaucheria clavata in einer Quelle; BM; Slide BM 101 794 (Delgado & al. 2016: 4, fig. 2) Notes: Package no. 185 (type material) housed in the Botanic Garden Meise (Wetzel & Ector, 2015). But Delgado et al. have "Holotype. Slide BM 101 794, prepared with material from the sample collected in Mogofores, housed in the Natural History Museum, London (UK), illustrated in Figs 3–62. The valve representing the holotype is illustrated in Fig. 9" and mention an "isotype" Slide ZU10/14, prepared from the sample Mogofores, housed at the Friedrich Hustedt Diatom Collection, Alfred-Wegener- Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung, Bremerhaven, Germany (BRM).
