The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chamaepinnularia brevissima (Hustedt) C.E.Wetzel & Ector.

Type locality: Central Java, Indonesia; (Hustedt 1937: 273) Notes: Dieng-Plateau, Java; from a freshwater acid (pH 4.2-4.5) environment in Java (Telaga Warn) ( Wetzel et al. 2013: 151, 164).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), extremely short (Stearn 1973).
