The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Proschkinia bulnheimii (Grunow) Karayeva.

no loc.; (INA 1996) Notes: According to Kim et al. (2020: 958), P. bulnheimii is a tube dwelling species described from inland saline waters in Germany.
