Taxonomic note
Metzeltin & Lange-Bertalot (2007: 169) comment "The various syntypes from North- and Central America are very probably not conspecific; a lectotype has to be selected. On the other hand the diverse 'second hand' concepts of this taxon concern, without any doubt, heterospecific taxa. Therefore it is actually difficult or even impossible to identify correctly any recent population similar to the syntypes of Navicula amphigomphus. The complex of taxa around N. amphigomphus needs a profound taxonomical revision. See also under Neidium ehrenbergii nov. comb. nov. nom. i.e. syn. Neidium amphigomphus (Ehrenberg) Pfitzer sensu Reichardt 1995 based on Pinnularia amphigomphus Ehrenberg 1843 and not on Navicula amphigomphus Ehrenberg 1843 from Cayenne. In this context none of the figs 122: 1-9 in Metzeltin & Lange-Bertalot (1998), all from Brazil, belong really to N. amphigomphus (Ehrenberg) Pfitzer." - (28 August 2023) - M.D. Guiry
