The type species (holotype) of the genus Pinnularia is Pinnularia viridis (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Rhopalodia gibba (Ehrenberg) O.Müller.

Two taxa are currently (November 2021) passing under this name: Rhopalodia gibba (Ehrenberg) O.Müller described as Navicula gibba Ehrenberg 1832 from Russia and Pinnularia gibba sensu Ehrenberg 1843 which is the taxon in Krammer (2000) and Cantonati & al. (2017) which refers to material described by Ehrenberg (1843) from Chile. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
