Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gomphosphaeria is Gomphosphaeria aponina Kützing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Snowella lacustris (Chodat) Komárek & Hindák.

Syntype localities: "...j'ai trouvé cette algue dans les lacs suivants : Aiguebelette, Paladru, Bourget, Annecy, Joux, Neuchâtel, Bienne, Morat, Majeur, Genève, soit dans dix lacs au moins" [Feance and Switzerland]; (Chodat 1898: 185)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), inhabiting lakes (Stearn 1973).
