The type species (lectotype) of the genus Phormidium is Phormidium lucidum Kützing ex Gomont.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pseudanabaena mucicola (Naumann & Huber-Pestalozzi) Schwabe.

Type locality: Sweden (Naumann); Switzerland (Huber-Pestalozzi) in sheath of various plant and animal plankton organisms (Microcystis, Gomphosphaeria, Chlorococcus); (Index Nominum Algarum)
