Type locality: "Abano Terme, a small town in the Province of Padua (Veneto region, northern Italy)" (Van de Vijver & Bosak 2020: 1). Lectotype designated by Van de Vijver & Bosak: BR Van Heurck collection slide BR-4634, prepared from Kützing sample Decade XVI, n° 153 (Van de Vijver & Bosak 2020: 1).

Origin of species name
Adjective A (Latin), pertaining to warm baths; from Aponus, a warm medical fountain at Bangi d'Albano near Padua, Italy.
