Type locality: Germany: N.W. coast (Index Nominum Algarum). Notes: Hustedt (1939. p. 662, figs 116-118; Simonsen, 1987, Hustedt's Diatom Type 1: p. 261, 2: pl. 385, figs 10-18 (lectotype 10, 11); lectotype slide no. 267/3, type locality: Hamburger Sand, Leybucht, Germany (Suzuki et al., 2010: 223).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), smooth, free from uneveness, hairs or roughness (Stearn 1973).
