The type species (lectotype) of the genus Synedra is Synedra balthica Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Fragilaria tenera (W.Smith) Lange-Bertalot.

Syntype localities: freshwater. Saltcoats: Dr. Arnott. New Forest; Lough Alloa, Co. Cork; near Blarney and near Killaloe, Co. Cork: W. Smith; (Smith 1856: 98) Notes: Lectotype locality: Blarney, Co. Cork, Ireland. "Lectotype is selected from Coll. W. Smith VI 46 C8, housed in Herbarium National Botanic Garden of Belgium, Meise. This is the same material as housed in British Museum, London, as slide no BM. 20878 from Blarney, South Ireland. Lectotype designated by H. Lange-Bertalot in Krammer & Lange-Bertalot 1991, p. 460."
