The type species (holotype) of the genus Chantransia is Chantransia nigricans De Candolle.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Audouinella pygmaea (Kützing) Weber Bosse.

Vis et al. (2006) consider it useful to continue to recognize entities with particular morphological characters and propose the form taxa Chantransia richardsii, C. macrospora and C. pygmaea. - (13 September 2006) - G.M. Guiry

Taxonomic notes
According to Chiasson et al. (2007: 257), the form taxon Chantransia pygmaea (specimens from the Hawaiian Islands) is unequivocally associated with five taxa, Batrachospermum ambiguum, B. arcuatum, B. atrum, Nemalionopsis tortuosa and Thorea violacea. - (20 November 2007) - G.M. Guiry
According to Necchi & Oliveira (2011: 685), nine species are associated with "C. pygmaea", including members of the Batrachospermales (B. antipodites, B. arcuatum, B. involutum, B. helminthosum, Kumano ambigua, K. virgatodecaisneana and Sirodotia suecica) and the Thoreales (Nemalionopsis tortuosa and Thorea hispida). Affinities have also been observed with taxa of higher taxonomic levels of three genera of the Batrachospermales (Batrachospermum, Paralemaneae and Kumanoa). - (27 July 2011) - G.M. Guiry
