This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gomphonema turris Ehrenberg.

Type Information
New York; Smithfield R.I.; Maine?; (INA 1996) Notes: West Point, New York and Smithfield. Reichardt (2015) notes that it was not possible to get a clear idea of G. turris from the type material from New York (Jahn, pers. comm.). The marked specimen from Japan was clearer but does not represent the type.
Origin of Species Name
Participle A (Latin), acuminate, i.e. tapering gradually or abruptly from inwardly curved sides into a narrow point (Stearn 1983).
