The type species (lectotype) of the genus Laurencia is Laurencia obtusa (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chondrophycus ceylanicus (J.Agardh) M.J.Wynne, Serio, Cormaci & G.Furnari

Origin of species name
Adjective A (Latin), Of (from) Ceylon, an island in the Indian Ocean off southern India (cf. ceylonensis & ceylonicus).

Type locality: Sri Lanka (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 505). Notes: Wynne et al. ( 2005: 499) note that there are isotypes: Harvey's Ceylon Algae, No 17 (in Herbarium Thuret held in PC unnumbered sheet); Harveys's Ceylon Algae, No 17 (MICH).
