The type species (lectotype) of the genus Laurencia is Laurencia obtusa (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Palisada cruciata (Harvey) K.W.Nam.

Adjective (Latin), cross-shaped (Stearn 1973).
