The type species (lectotype) of the genus Penium is Penium margaritaceum Brébisson ex Ralfs.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Closterium navicula var. crassum (West & G.S.West) Grönblad.

Syntype localities: near Balallan, Lewis; near Tarbert, Harris in the outer Hebrides, Scotland.;

Noun (Latin), diminutive of navis, a ship; a small vessel, a boat, skiff (Lewis & Short 1890).
