This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Batrachospermum gelatinosum (Linnaeus) De Candolle.

Holotype locality: Toward Mt. Albert Edward, Central District, Papua New Guinea; (Kumano & Watanabe 1983: 91) Holotype: Watanabe; 28 October 1975; Small stream, 3,300 m alt. (secondary grassland; water pH was 5.5); Herb. Fac. Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), moniliform, cylindrical but contracted at regular intervals like a string of beads (Stearn 1973).
