Type Information
Type locality: "Habitat in Europae fontibus praestantissimis limpidissimis" [Lives in Europe's most outstanding and clearest springs]. Probably south of England.; (Linnaeus 1753: 1166) Lectotype (designated by Irvine in Spencer & al. 2009: 243): OXF; specimen on which tab. 7 fig. 42 from Dillenius’s Historia Muscorum is based (Compère 1991: 22) Notes: Presumably northern Europe; see Compère 1991 (Entwisle & al. 2009). Northern Europe (Rueness 2010: 383). The lectotype specimen is the one upon which Dillenius’s "Conferva fontana nodosa , spematis ranarum instar lubrica, major & fusca" Historia Muscorum 36, pl. 7: fig. 42, cited in synonymy by Linnaeus. Vis & Morgan (2021: 160) have "presumably Great Britain in northern Europe". Dillenius (1746: 37) clearly says "Ab eo tempore in Angliad quibusdam fontibus etiam obfervavi, prasfertim in fonte amplo & limpido vici Godalmin in Surreia, juxta viam regiam, & in fonte quodam prope Ciceftriamin Sussexia." [From that time in England I have also met with certain wells, especially in the large and clear fountain of the village of Godalmin in Surrey, by the royal road, and in a certain fountain near Chichester in Sussex.]; so it is reasonable to say that the type is from England.
