Nomenclatural note
According to INA, Grunow's segregation of the type material of C. polyacanthus as var. baltica is illegitimate. Hence, the correct name for the Baltic species would be Thalassiosira polyacantha (Grunow) comb. nov. For the Arctic Ocean material two names are available: Coscinodiscus polyacanthus var. davisiana Grunow 1884 and C. p. var. intermedia Grunow1884 = C. joergesenii Ostenstenfeld 1910. - (05 July 2016) - G.M.
