This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Exilaria.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Licmophora flabellata (Greville) C.Agardh.
Type locality: "HAB. On Zostera marina, and several small Algae, in spring. Appin, Captain CARMICHAEL."; (Greville 1827: pl. 289)

Adjective (Latin), flabellate, fan-shaped (Stearn 1973).
