Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pinnularia brauniana (Grunow) Studnička.

Nomenclatural note
Navicula braunii Grunow, was originally first introduced without a description, but is validated by analytical figures (see ICN Art. 38.7 "For the purpose of Art. 38.5, prior to 1 January 1908, an illustration with analysis (see Art. 38.9 and 38.10) is acceptable in place of a written description or diagnosis."). It is not the same as Navicula brauniana Grunow, 1876, above, also validated by illustrations. This latter name has a type from Loka in Cameroon, whilst Navicula braunii Grunow is typified by material from Liresse in Belgium. - (11 March 2016) - M.D. Guiry
