The type species (holotype) of the genus Orthoseira is Melosira americana K├╝tzing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Paralia marina (W.Smith) Heiberg.

Type locality: very generally distributed in deep water. Coast of Sussex: Cork and Kinsale Harbours, etc: W.Smith; Coast of Norfolk: Brightwell. Frith [Firth?] of Clyde: Hennedy; Pembroke Harbour and River Thames: Capron; River Tyne; (Index Nominum Algarum)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), growing in the sea (Stearn 1973).
