The type species (lectotype) of the genus Stauroneis is Stauroneis phoenicenteron (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gololobovia obliqua (W.Gregory) Kulikovskiy, Glushchenko & Kociolek.
