The type species (holotype) of the genus Actiniscus is Actiniscus pentasterias (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Corethron pennatum (Grunow) Ostenfeld.

Type locality: Antarctic Ocean; (Ostenfeld 1902: pl. 82 bis, figs 1, 12) (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: "Lectotype: pl. 82 bis, figs 1, 12. Epitype: BRM Zu4/87" (Crawford & al. 1998: 19).

Adjective (Latin), pinnate (Stearn 1973).
