Taxonomic notes
Taxonomic synonym of S.cristaefolium C. Agardh (Silva et al. 1996). According to Mattio et al. (2009: 1224), this is a synonym of S. ilicifolium (Turner) C. Agardh (on the authority of of Womersley & Bailey 1970: 296). However,Womersely & Bailey consider S. cristaefolium to be the accepted name. Mattio et al. (2009: 1225) note that reexamination of S. ilicifolium and S. cristaefolium type specimens led them to conclude that both taxa are part of the same species' morphological continuum and given the anteriority of epithets, S. ilicifolium shoule be considered the current name. - (04 March 2014) - G.M. Guiry
Stiger et al. (2003: 8) note that Sargassum duplicatum has been traditionally placed in the section Acanthocarpicae. However, in the molecular treatment using ITS-2 sequences, a clear affinity with the Phyllocystae species (S. mcclurei and S. quinhonense) as well as with the Zygocarpicae species (S. polycystum and S. myriocystum was demonstrated. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
