Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum ilicifolium (Turner) C.Agardh

Taxonomic notes
Tseng & Lu (2002) note that Noro et al. (1994: 30) considered that S. sandei should be a synonym of S. ilicifolium and that Ajisaka et al (1997: 28) considered that S. sandei should be a synonym of S. duplicatum. Acording to Tseng & Lu (2002), these are three distinct species.
General environment
This is a marine species.

Type locality: south coast of Flores, Indonesia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 677).
