Publication details
Sargassum yendoi Okamura & Yamada in Yamada 1938: 121, figs 1, 2; pls 21, 22

Published in: Yamada, Y. (1938). Notes on some Japanese algae, VIII. Scientific Papers of the Institute of Algological Research, Faculty of Science, Hokkaido Imperial University 2: 119-130, 4 figs, pls 19-31.

Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Infrageneric classification
Subgenus Sargassum Section Sargassum

Heterotypic Synonym(s)
Sargassum henslowianum var. condensatum Yamada 1942

Taxonomic notes
Stiger et al. (2003: 8) note that the results of their studies support the view of Noro et al. (1995) that S. yendoi should be transferred from subgenus Phyllotrichia to the subgenus Sargassum. Their studies reveal that the ITS-2 sequences of S. yendoi and S. piluliferum are exactly the same and close to other Malacocarpicae species.

Malacocarpicae? Section Sargassum [= Section Malacocarpicae] (Matteo & Payri (2009). According to Cho et al. (2012: 479), S. piluliferum and S. yendoi formed a moderately supported subclade (78-87% bootstrap) with the members of S. sect. Sargassum. - (20 Feb 2013) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.

Type information
Syntype localities: various, all in Japan Notes: According to Noro et al. (1995: 9), the type locality is Enoshima, Shimoda or Hayama, Japan and they note that a lectotype needs to be selected from Yamada's specimens in SAP.
