Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.

Type Information
Syntype localities: various, all in Japan; Notes: According to Noro et al. (1995: 9), the type locality is Enoshima, Shimoda or Hayama, Japan and they note that a lectotype needs to be selected from Yamada's specimens in SAP.

Taxonomic notes
Stiger et al. (2003: 8) note that the results of their studies support the view of Noro et al. (1995) that S. yendoi should be transferred from subgenus Phyllotrichia to the subgenus Sargassum. Their studies reveal that the ITS-2 sequences of S. yendoi and S. piluliferum are exactly the same and close to other Malacocarpicae species. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
