Taxonomic note
According to Yamada (1944) the vegetative parts of this species resemble those of Rhodochorton, especially Acrochaetium spongicolum but it differs in having very peculiar stichidia. He considers it impossible to determine the systematic position due to the lack of cystocarps. According to Kitayama (2009), the presence of "stichidia" is actually an artifact, due to a cover of sponge spicules, forming bundles originally mistaken as part of the alga. - (17 August 2009) - G.M.
