Adjective (Latin), belonging to the extreme north, northern (Stearn 1973).

Hasle & Syvertsen (1997: 74) record this species as Coscinodiscus (lacustris var?) hyperboreus.

Type locality: Mis Vankarem (= Cap Wankarema) East Siberian Sea (Hasle & Lange 1989: 125). Lectotype: W 2886 (the slide referrred to on Grunow's Bilder-Sammlung No. 8863 as having been used for Grunow 1884, pl. 4, fig. 26) (Hasle & Lange 1989: 125).
