Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Peyssonnelia squamaria (S.G.Gmelin) Decaisne ex J.Agardh
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), furnished with scales (Stearn 1973).
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
According to De Clerck (2003), this is an illegitimate new name for Fucus squamarius (1768: 171, pl. 20, fig. 1a,b). Nothing prevented Lamouroux from using the epithet squamaria and hence the change to squamata was unwarranted.
This is a marine species.
