Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Peyssonnelia squamaria (S.G.Gmelin) Decaisne ex J.Agardh

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), furnished with scales (Stearn 1973).

Nomenclatural notes
According to De Clerck (2003), this is an illegitimate new name for Fucus squamarius (1768: 171, pl. 20, fig. 1a,b). Nothing prevented Lamouroux from using the epithet squamaria and hence the change to squamata was unwarranted.
