The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melyvonnea madagascariensis (Foslie) Athanasiadis & D.L.Ballantine.

Participle B (Latin), blushing, reddening, rose (Stearn 1973).
