Type locality: Muttonbird Island, Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia (Millar 1997: 117). Holotype: A.J.K. Millar & P.W. Gabrielson; 13 August 1982; Grows on rocks from 7 to 20 m deep, generally on the sandy seabed in the scour zone where little else grows. MELU AM 599 (Millar 1997: 117).
