The type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulerpa is Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Caulerpa chemnitzia var. turbinata (J.Agardh) Fernández-García & Riosmena-Rodríguez

Type locality: near Tor, Sinai Peninsula, Egypt (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 837).

Adjective (Latin), with flowers borne in racemes.

Taxonomic notes
According to Silva et al. (1996: 838) the name Caulerpa racemosa var. clavifera has been misapplied to this species by Delf & Mitchell (1921: 95).

Distributional notes
According to Huisman (2000) this species is probably distributed from the Houtman Abrolhos, Western Australia, around northern Australia.
