Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Antithamnion is Antithamnion cruciatum (C.Agardh) Nägeli.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: Muttonbird Island, Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia (Millar 1990: 386). Holotype: A.J.K. Millar & J.M. Huisman AM847; MELU (Millar 1990: 386).

Distributional notes
Probably introduced into the Mediterranean (Algeria and Spain) from the east coast of Australia (Athanasiadis, 1996: 143) probably by shipping (Verlaque et al. 2015: 121). Now widespread in the western Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 121).

Habitat notes
On Posidonia oceanica, breakwaters and coastal detritic bottoms at depths of 0.5 to 35 m (Klein & Verlaque 2011). - (17 Sep 2012) - Wendy Guiry
