Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Nitzschia is Nitzschia elongata Hassal.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pseudo-nitzschia subcurvata (Hasle) G.A.Fryxell

Type information
Type locality: Antarctic zone (62°30'S, 19°42'W) (Hasle 1974: 426). Holotype : G.R.H.; 31 January 1957; Univ. Oslo marked specimens on slide no 10 (Hasle 1974: 426). Notes: "Brategg" samples (INA).
