Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gracilaria is Gracilaria compressa (C.Agardh) Greville.

Type Information
Type locality: "HAB. In littore Martinicae insulae hauc speciem legit ci. Duperrey." [Martinique, French West Indies]; (Montagne 1842: 252) Holotype: Duperrey; PC; (Gurgel et al. 2004: 174) Notes: Type collector: Duperrey (INA). "Epitype": US Alg. Coll.-204336; NW Gulf of Mexico: offshore Louisiana, dredged from ca 75 m depth, R/V Pelican station 3.2, July 1, 2001, leg. S. Fredericq. According to Hardesty & Freshwater (2018), the currently named G. mammillaris "epitype" (US Alg. Coll.-204336) represents a unique species, Gracilaria gurgelii. However, the supposed epitype was not designated correctly (art. 7.11) and was ineffective.

Distributional note
According to Hardesty & Freshwater (2018), G. mammillaris is most likely not present in North Carolina. They also consider that specimens from Venezuela and Brazil originally identified as Gracilaria curtissiae to be G. mammillaris. - (24 October 2018) - G.M. Guiry
