Type locality: Martinique, French West Indies, Windward Is., Lesser Antilles (Gurgel et al. 2004: 174). Holotype: US Alg. Coll.-204336 (epitype) PC (Gurgel et al. 2004: 174). Notes: Type collector: Duperrey (INA). Epitype: US Alg. Coll.-204336; NW Gulf of Mexico: offshore Louisiana, dredged from ca 75 m depth, R/V Pelican station 3.2, July 1, 2001, leg. S. Fredericq. According to Hardesty & Freshwater (2018), the currently designated G. mammillaris epitype represents a unique species, Gracilaria gurgelii.
