The type species (holotype) of the genus Phymatolithon is Phymatolithon polymorphum Foslie.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Crusticorallina muricata (Foslie) P.W.Gabrielson, Martone, K.R.Hind & C.P.Jensen.

Nomenclatural note
Athanasiadis & Ballantine (2024: 201): "The status of this species is pending typification since according to Woelkerling (1993a: 154), 'The holotype element consists of plants on 9(-10) stones.'" The authors seemed unaware of Hind & al. (2016) who nominate "Lectotypus: UC 341316." and transfer the species to Crusticorallina. - (26 February 2024) - M.D. Guiry
