General environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Cells are 0.6 to 0.8 µm in diameter and 1.2 to 1.6 µm in length just prior to division. In addition to divinyl chlorophylls a and b, contains zeaxanthin, ß-carotene, an unidentified carotenoid, and a chlorophyll c-like pigment possibly Mg 3,8-divinylpheoporphyrin a5.

Habitat
Occurs at high cell concentrations in the euphoric zone of the open oceans. In the temperate oceans its distribution and abundance follow seasonal patterns.

Type locality: Sargasso Sea, Atlantic Ocean (Chisholm et al. 1992: 299). Type: B. Palenik; v.1988; 120 m. (Chisholm et al. 1992: 299). Notes: Type strain CCMP-1375 (Center for the Culture of Marine Phytoplankton, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, West Boothbay Harbor, Maine, USA).
