The type species (holotype) of the genus Stephanodiscus is Stephanodiscus niagarae Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cyclostephanos costatilimbus (Hiromu Kobayasi & Hideaki Kobayashi) Stoermer, Håkansson & E.C.Theriot.
