The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
Athough this seems to be a later homonym of Polysiphonia bicornis Sonder, a description was not provided by Sonder (1880: 35); the name as subsequently used validly by Ohta (1973) for an alga from Japan (Silva et al., 1996: 537) is thus legitimate. - (26 Jul 2011) - M.D. Guiry
